Country Music

Country music also known as western music, originated in the southern part of the United States in the early years of the 1920’s. It appears to be highly influenced by folk music and the blues. This genre is particularly loved for its informal, emotive tone of lyrics with harmonies mostly created by string instruments like electric guitars, acoustic guitars, the banjo, fiddles and harmonicas.

The earlier term for this genre used to be ‘hillbilly music’ as it had evolved from similar roots of Western Europe.  People only started using the term ‘country music’ after the 1940s. Country music was not a creation of noted artists and musicians, but of average day to day working class Americans. They would blend traditional songs from the European countries, such as Celtic tunes with English ballads and other foreign musical traditions to create new songs.
When European immigrants travelled to the southern Appalachian mountains of eastern North America 300 years ago they took their instruments with them. Over the years as more people set foot in America, country music evolved.

Country music was introduced to the world as a southern phenomenon. Bristol, Tennessee has been marked as the birthplace of the country music (according to historic Bristol recording sessions of 1927).

In terms of radio airplay, country music is the most popular musical genre in the U.S.
